Tillerson's Russia and ISIS Fighting Anti-Propaganda Unit Is Losing Key Staff
An embattled anti-propaganda unit intended to combat Russian and Islamic State militant group (ISIS) misinformation is losing key staff even after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson began to fund the program at the urging of Congress. Nash Borges, chief technology officer at the anti-propaganda Global Engagement Center’s (GEC), left the unit last Friday according to Defense One, which obtained a copy of his final email to staff.
Tit for Tat: Diplomatic Expulsions and Closures
On September 2, 2017, U.S. authorities seized the buildings of the General Consulate of the Russian Federation in San Francisco and the Russian Trade Mission in Washington, D.C. Simultaneously, Russian representatives were denied access to the rented premises of the Russian Trade Mission in New York...Despite emotional coloring and personification, this situation suggests a “tit for tat” of diplomatic expulsions. The diplomats of both countries should know where to draw the line.
Bangladesh PM Warns Myanmar over Rohingya Refugees
Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has promised to help more than 300,000 Rohingya refugees but warned her government would “take steps” to ensure Myanmar “take their nationals back”. Ms Hasina visited Kutupalong refugee camp at Cox’s Bazar yesterday to distribute aid and told tens of thousands of refugees her government would build a huge new camp to house a quarter of a million refugees.
Cuba Receives Aid from Venezuela after Hurricane Irma
A Venezuelan army plane carrying 7.3 tons of humanitarian aid arrived in Havana on Tuesday, becoming the first foreign relief to arrive in Cuba after Hurricane Irma battered the island over the weekend. The Chinese-made Y-8 plane touched down at Jose Marti International Airport with a message of solidarity from the people and government of Venezuela, Havana's main political and economic ally in the region.
