Agra, Chengdu of China are now sister cities

To promote cultural and commercial ties, encourage tourism, develop educational tie-ups, exchange technology and cooperate in a host of other spheres, Agra Municipal Corporation (AMC) signed a sister city agreement with Chengdu city of China on Thursday. A delegation from the neighbouring country visited Agra Municipal Corporation office on Thursday afternoon for the purpose.

AGRA: To promote cultural and commercial ties, encourage tourism, develop educational tie-ups, exchange technology and cooperate in a host of other spheres, Agra Municipal Corporation (AMC) signed a sister city agreement with Chengdu city of China on Thursday. A delegation from the neighbouring country visited Agra Municipal Corporation office on Thursday afternoon for the purpose.
Nine guests from Chengdu were warmly welcomed by mayor Indrajeet Arya, district magistrate Gaurav Dayal, councillors and AMC officials. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province in southwest china. It is the fifth-most populous city in the neighbouring country and is one of the most important economic, financial, commercial, cultural, transportation and communication centre of China.
Lu Sheng, director general, Chengdu Municipal Foreign and Overseas Chinese affair office, extended cooperation in upgradation of sewage system, development of green energy and solid waste management. Agra district magistrate suggested that AMC officials would be sent to Chengdu to learn how municipal works take place in China.
After a discussion, Agra mayor and Tang Liangzhi, Chengdu committee secretary of Communist Party of China, signed an agreement to develop cultural, touristic, social, medical and educational exchanges between the two cities.
Talking to TOI, Agra mayor Indrajeet Arya said, “Under the Sister Cities Agreement, both the cities will be benefited through exchange of art and culture, business and trade relationships will develop, community development and municipal exchange programmes will take place and educational exchanges will happen. Members of the Chinese delegation extended all cooperation for technological advancement in different fields. Tourism between both the cities will also be developed.”
Twin towns or sister cities are a form of legal or social agreement between towns, cities, counties, prefectures, provinces, regions, states and even countries in geographically and politically distinct areas to promote cultural and commercial ties.
