Celebrities pose in protest at Darfur

This article is more than 16 years old

Celebrities, including actors Matt Damon and Thandie Newton, showed their opposition to the war in Darfur yesterday in a series of powerful images. They were photographed destroying children's toys as a symbol of the suffering of young people in the region. Newton was pictured blow-torching a Barbie doll, Damon smashing a dolls' house with a baseball bat. Yesterday was designated a global day of protest against the five-year conflict. According to the UN, more than 200,000 people have been killed in the Darfur conflict, and some two million displaced. Protesters demonstrated outside the Sudanese embassy in London yesterday.
