Suu Kyi: Dropping non-violent protest is 'possible'

Aung San Suu Kyi's Reith Lectures were secretly recorded in Burma and smuggled out of the country. After the first lecture was played to an audience at Broadcasting House in London, Ms Suu Kyi joined the audience's discussion via a satellite link from Burma.

She discussed her commitment to non-violence, and said "it's possible" she would consider abandoning the non-violent approach in Burma's continuing struggle.

Speaking to the Reith Lecture chair Sue Lawley and, first, historian Timothy Garton-Ash, Aung San Suu Kyi also drew parallels between Burma's struggle with the Arab Spring.

Aung San Suu Kyi's 2011 Reith Lectures will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 at 0900 BST on Tuesday 28 June and Tuesday 5 July. They will also be broadcast at various times on the BBC World Service.

You can listen to the lectures in full online, or by downloading the programme podcast. You can also watch the first lecture, which was filmed in Burma earlier this month.
