Newswise — Los Angeles, CA – USC Annenberg's Center on Public Diplomacy (CPD) welcomes U.S. Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Richard Stengel on Wednesday, October 15, at 12:00 p.m., for a discussion entitled “Why We Need to Harden Our Soft Power.” The former managing editor of Time Magazine, Under Secretary Stengel was sworn into office in February 2014, to provide global strategic leadership for all Department of State public diplomacy and public affairs engagement, and oversee the bureaus of Educational and Cultural Affairs, International Information Programs, and Public Affairs, and the Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications. He will visit the brand new Wallis Annenberg Hall as part of the CPD-Journalism Directors’ Forum. Mr. Stengel, a collaborator on Nelson Mandela’s autobiography Long Walk to Freedom and a 2012 Emmy Award recipient, will speak about the challenges, and opportunities, of conducting public diplomacy in a complex, hyper-connected world. This event marks the third such visit to CPD by a sitting U.S. Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. Previous visits from heads of this department include Under Secretary Karen Hughes in 2005 and Under Secretary Tara Sonenshine in 2012. Under Secretary Stengel’s visit will also be streamed live on the internet, with a live and virtual question and answer session to follow. All questions to the Under Secretary should include #CPDStengel for consideration. Moderating, will be USC Annenberg Professor Judy Muller. An award-winning television correspondent, Ms. Muller has reported for ABC news since 1990 and is a regular contributor to NPR’s Morning Edition. The USC Center on Public Diplomacy was established in 2003.
