Voice of America said Tuesday its director David Ensor is stepping gown after nearly four years of leading the government-funded broadcast and digital news operation.

VOA, which is controlled by the Broadcasting Board of Governors, said Ensor planned on leaving by the year end but was leaving a few months earlier to allow the new BBG board to name its chosen director.

In a statement, VOA said Ensor helped initiate a "digital first" reorganization of VOA's newsroom and "a boost in programming to Africa."

Before joining VOA in June 2011, Ensor was director of communications and public diplomacy at the U.S. embassy in Kabul. Previously, he worked for NPR, ABC News and CNN.

VOA also named Clara Dominguez, who heads its Latin America division, as managing editor of the VOA News Center, the central hub for news gathering and production for its international programs.

In March, Andy Lack left his job as CEO of the Broadcasting Board of Governors after only about two months to rejoin NBC as head of the network's news division.

André Mendes replaced Lack as interim CEO of BBG, which also oversees Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio and TV Marti, Radio Free Asia, and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks.
