After the match, individual awards were announced. Germany’s Manuel Neuer received the Golden Glove as the tournament’s best goalkeeper; Colombia’s James Rodriguez earned the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer, and Argentina’s Lionel Messi received the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.

Messi’s selection sparked controversy, especially after his team lost. Many made arguments for Germany’s Thomas Mueller, but Messi still found much appreciation on social media.
