CPD Summer Institute 2012 Concludes after an Intensive Two Weeks of Training

The seventh annual CPD Summer Institute in Public Diplomacy concluded on August 3rd. Twenty-three participants spent two weeks engaging in vigorous study, critical debate, and dynamic teamwork designed to enhance the practice of public diplomacy.

This year’s participants included diplomats, a journalist, and the head of an international organization. Nine countries were represented (Croatia, Israel, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Korea, UAE, UK, and the US).

The intensive program examined a wide range of topics: analyses of public diplomacy basics such as international broadcasting, cultural diplomacy, and advocacy; region-specific discussions about China, the Middle East and the European Union; and multidisciplinary classes that integrated social psychology, evaluation, digital diplomacy, and crisis communication. Sessions were guided by leading public diplomacy scholars and practitioners, and featured discussions, simulation exercises and student presentations.

Once again we saw our participants forge a professional community that enriched the institute and will foster continued interaction among these colleagues,” said Philip Seib, Director of the USC Center on Public Diplomacy.
