Atlas Obscura: Place Branding in Practice

Atlas Obscura is an online platform that features stories and events of interest around the world. One particular section, The Atlas, is a crowdsourced and curated collection of over 9,000 locations around the world. Spanning six continents and any number of themes, geotagged attractions such as the Beatles monument in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and Lummis Castle el Alisal in Los Angeles highlight obscure facets of city histories and encourage an alternative narrative that also furthers place branding. Atlas Obscura is particularly good at taking engagement from online to offline, not just by encouraging people to submit photos and check into the various locations, but by hosting Obscura Day, an annual global event that promotes and celebrates "the world's most curious and awe-inspiring places."
