Beyond the CNN Effect: Modern Media and Conflict

Eytan Gilboa, a CPD Visiting Senior Scholar, alongside Maria Gabrielsen Jumpert, Jason Miklian, and Piers Robinson, recently penned a new article on media-conflict interactions. In “Moving Media and Conflict Studies beyond the CNN Effect,” the authors posit that contemporary conflicts are best understood in light of multilevel or hybrid media environments. Although the CNN effect paradigm was useful in examining the effects of global news media in conflicts of the immediate post-Cold War era, modern media multiplication and fragmentation, coupled with technological innovations, have changed the landscape of media-conflict interaction. The authors explore how new global communication connectivity influences both the complex dimensions of international broadcasting and the lens through which scholars research the CNN effect.
