Philip Seib Talks Social Media & Terrorism

When asked about his new book As Terrorism Evolves: Media, Religion, and Governance, USC Annenberg Professor Philip Seib highlights how such terrorist groups as the Islamic State leverage digital media for recruitment. This recruitment often uses a personal touch, despite taking place entirely online.

"When the Islamic State finds a person, who is perhaps interested, there's a courtship that goes on involving gifts," says Seib. "Everything from copies of the Quran to bars of chocolate that get sent to that person. But the dialogue continues online."
