Q&A With Dr. Ma Ying-jeou

On November 6, 2017, CPD hosted more than 600 guests for "A Conversation with Ma Ying-jeou," former President of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Dr. Ma's keynote speech was followed by a lively Q&A discussion, moderated by Willow Bay, Dean of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

Dean Bay asked a series of timely questions, including: “In this moment in history where we are seeing countries, heads of state increasingly inward-looking, even nationalistic, do heads of state need to rethink their engagement strategies in a world of increased tensions and heightened sensitivities?"

Dr. Ma replied, "When I first heard about President Trump’s decision to pull out of TPP [Trans-Pacific Partnership], I was really shocked. Because my country has been working very hard, hoping to get into the second round of negotiations of TPP, but it’s gone.”
