In the run up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting [...] This unique cultural initiative, the first of its kind since CHOGM started taking place in 1971, was presented by the CHOGM Malta 2015 External Culture Program bearing the theme Culture as Global Value. It was co-financed by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs through its Cultural Diplomacy Fund together with the Arts Council Malta.

J. Calvin Jarrell knows Cubans have suffered because of their country’s social, political and economic isolation, but he can’t help but worry how changing tides will affect it. The retired dance professor emeritus at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has traveled to Cuba 24 times in nine years.

Why did the US State Department sponsor international dance tours during the Cold War? An official government narrative was sanctioned and framed by the US State Department and its partner organization, the United States Information Agency (USIA—and USIS abroad). However, the tours countered that narrative.

A hundred years later, dance is being used as a bridge over the century-old abyss between Turks and Armenians. The main purpose of DanceMotion USA, a cultural diplomacy program run by the Brooklyn Academy of Music for the State Department, is to send American troupes abroad. Yet the program also benefits New Yorkers directly by having an American company bring back a foreign one for a free, collaborative performance here. These visits have proven illuminating, even if the arranged artistic alliances haven’t always gelled.
