Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Richard Stengel led a delegation to Islamabad, Pakistan for the June 3 inaugural session of the U.S.-Pakistan Education, Science, and Technology Working Group, one of six such groups under the U.S.-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue. Under Secretary Stengel and Pakistani Minister for Planning, Development and Reform Ahsan Iqbal met in Islamabad to highlight the numerous higher education programs and exchanges between the United States and Pakistan, especially those in the fields of science and technology.

With the majority of radical websites and social media messages hosted on servers in the United States, US Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Richard Stengel yesterday found himself defending America’s stance of upholding the freedoms of religion and expression, including “the speech that we hate”, in response to questions on why the US authorities are not doing more to clamp down on such communications.

News has broken that the new nominee for the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs at the State Department will be Richard Stengel, who is leaving his position as Editor of Time Magazine. If confirmed, he will be the 8th Under Secretary since the creation of the position in 1999. Stengel will be replacing Tara Sonenshine, who left the R Office this June.

Richard Stengel, the managing editor of Time magazine, is leaving to become under secretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs at the State Department, according to people familiar with the appointment. Mr. Stengel replaces Tara Sonenshine, who held the post with Secretaries of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Kerry before leaving in July.
