How America Is Viewed From Abroad

The Daniel Pearl Foundation, in coordination with the Los Angeles Press Club, is hosting an opportunity to meet the 2008 Daniel Pearl Fellows. Established in 2003, in partnership with the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships, the Daniel Pearl Fellowship brings promising, mid-career foreign journalists to work for six months in U.S. newsrooms.

Umar Cheema, from Pakistan, and Utku Çakirözer, from Turkey, will share their experiences in America. The discussion will be moderated by the Editor in Cheif of The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles as they discuss how America is viewed from abroad, especially in Pakistan, Turkey and other Muslim countries, and how their personal experiences fit those views.

Cheema, age 29, is the first Daniel Pearl Fellow to work at the New York Times. He works in Islamabad for the Karachi-based newspaper, The News International, reporting on politics, jihadi groups, and terrorism. He served as the Secretary General of the Islamabad chapter of the South Asia Free Media Association, and is working on a book about the history of suicide bombing.

Çakirözer, age 37, is the second Daniel Pearl Fellow to join the staff of the Los Angeles Times. Mr. Çakirözer works in Ankara for the Turkish language newspaper Milliyet, reporting on politics, defense and foreign policy.
