An oversight committee of the British Parliament sharply criticized top BBC executives and trustees, including the corporation’s former director general, Mark Thompson, now the president and chief executive of The New York Times Company, judging that their award of severance payments to departing managers appeared to be part of a culture of cronyism.

The BBC is due to cut comments made by violinist Nigel Kennedy about “apartheid” in Israel when it broadcasts his concert, performed with Palestinian artists as part of the Proms musical festival, on British television channels next week. The concert, held at London’s Royal Albert Hall last week, featured 17 musicians from the Palestine Strings, the troupe performed Vivaldi’s Four Seasons alongside Kennedy. Kennedy likened the situation in Israel to apartheid in South Africa.

BBC World News will launch its international HD channel on Arabsat on August 5. Arabsat will be the BBC’s first distribution partner in the Middle East to offer the news channel in HD. In January, BBC World News’ unveiled its new look, following a re-launch from the heart of the BBC Newsroom at Broadcasting House in central London.

The BBC launched a new morning radio show in Nepal August 1. The BBC Nepali 15-minute show began at 7:15 a.m. local time, broadcasting regional and international news. From Kathmandu, the station airs on 103 FM, re-broadcasting via a nationwide network of 260 FM stations. "The BBC has a strong audience base in Nepal, and this expansion of radio programming shows our commitment to providing these audiences with highest-quality news and information,” said BBC Nepali Editor Rabindra Mishra.

Murrow’s last broadcast on CBS occurred July 25, 1964, on “FAREWELL TO STUDIO NINE,” a 55-minute special broadcast on the radio network commemorating the closing of perhaps the most famous radio news studio in all of broadcasting, at least up to that time 49 years ago. Studio Nine, at 485 Madison Avenue in New York City, was the anchor studio-news center for CBS before, during, and after World War II, until the move of all of us in late July, 1964 to the new CBS Broadcast Center across town.

The relaunch of BBC Afrique, the World Service’s French language service for Africa, has increased the hours of transmission and introduced a new more interactive style of presentation. However an Over to You listener says that it also means he no longer hears English language programmes – we hear from BBC Afrique’s editor why the service has changed in response to developments in African radio, and the balance between French and English programmes.

Three BBC correspondents based in three of India's largest cities have complained to the corporation's director-general, Tony Hall, about the size of their redundancy offers. Ram Dutt Tripathi, who works in Lucknow, Mohammed Omer Farooq (Hyderabad) and Manikant Thakur (Patna) have asked why they are not entitled to the same pay-off terms as other BBC staff.
