"The Fierce Wife,"[...] about a woman dealing with the aftermath of her husband’s infidelity, was seen as the best ambassador for Taiwanese culture. With a contested national identity, no formal relations with major powers and no membership in international organizations such as the United Nations, Taiwanese officials are testing a new strategy: soap opera diplomacy.

Kinmen (Taiwan) is eyeing closer commercial ties with China. China is seeking unification with Taiwan under its "one country, two systems" formula by which Hong Kong, a former British colony, returned to Chinese rule in 1997. And Kinmen, or "Golden Gate", is a test for China's ambitions to recover Taiwan through soft power.

Taiwanese rapper Soft Lipa (蛋堡), Latin rap rock band Boxing (拳) and Chinese Canadian pop rock band io will be featured in a "Taiwan Night" concert that is part of the event, according to GCA Entertainment, which is jointly organizing the concert with Taiwan's Ministry of Culture.

Tsai, who plays a Chinese string instrument called the "liuqin," will join with 24 other musicians selected from 16 countries and territories to participate in the OneBeat 2015 Program in the United States from Oct. 12 to Nov. 11.

A Taiwanese artist donated his latest work made from discarded steel cables to Karlsruhe as a gift to the German city that is celebrating its 300th anniversary this year. Speaking about his work "Taiwan Wishful" at a news conference Tuesday, sculptor Kang Mu-xiang said he was pleased to play a part in promoting cultural diplomacy.
